What is a Total Knee Replacement?

This is an operation that replaces a damaged knee joint with an artificial joint. It is called a Total Knee Replacement because both sides of the joint- the thigh ( Femur) and shin (tibia) are replaced by artificial components. The patella ( knee cap ) is sometimes resurfaced as well.

What are the benefits of a Total Knee Replacement?

The main benefit of total knee replacement is pain relief. the pain experienced from the arthritic joint will usually be greatly improved. initially you will experience a different type of pain as a result of surgery, which will subside as you recover from your operation.

Another benefit is improved functional ability. For instance you should be able to walk at least the same distances and probably even further than before your surgery. Climbing the stairs and other daily activities will become easier.

As a result of the above your quality of life should therefore improve, but remember that it takes time to recover and build up your muscle strength.

The physical therapist will see you after your operation to assess your ability to manage everyday activities independently at home.
